Students and faculty hung 56 photographic images at the Kress Gallery in downtown Spokane as part of preparations for this year's 2011 Society for Photographic Education Northwest Region Conference.

Volunteers have been hauling artwork around to different venues and setting up displays that celebrate the diversity of photography and its impact on our culture.

Imagery ranges from candid street photographs that capture everyday moments to colorful abstract imagery that is musical in nature.

Trying to figure out what images fit next to others is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

The Kress Gallery Exhibition is a group show of SPE Members who submitted work for review and consideration to be a part of the exhibition. Each image was selected based upon a unique attribute or idea that is represented within the work.

Conference Co-Chairs and SFCC Faculty members Ira Gardner and Melissa Rackham have been working for months to put the conference together and the gallery exhibitions are just the finishing touches.

The Spokane Falls Community College Photography Program is hosting the Northwest Region Conference for the Society for Photographic Education November 3rd - 6th.

SPE is a national nonprofit organization, provides not only a forum for the discussion of photography as a means of creative expression and cultural insight, but nurtures its development through teaching, criticism, and scholarship.

Conference Theme: Visual Evolution
Conference Chairs: Ira Gardner & Melissa Rackham

The 2011 SPE Northwest regional conference will examine what many media theorists describe as a ‘21st Century Renaissance’ brought about by innovations in digital imaging and internet technology that are comparable to the impact of Gutenberg’s press.

The transformation from analog to digital and the convergence of still and motion photography into compact media technology constitutes a renegotiation of traditional ideas about photography and visual literacy that is emerging into questions about how photographers are addressing the impact of New Media.

1. Kress Gallery - SPE Member Group Show

The Kress Gallery is hosting the 2011 Society for Photographic Education Northwest Regional Conference Member Exhibition. The theme of the conference is “Visual Evolution” and will feature a wide range of image-making techniques and genres that celebrate the convergence of historic and contemporary photographic technologies. This group show will feature work by artists and educators from throughout the country.

2. Spokane Public Library - Eye of the World

The downtown branch of the Spokane Public Library is hosting a photography exhibition in conjunction with the November "First Friday Arts Tour" and the SPE Northwest Conference.

Images by social documentary photographers all over the United States are being presented in an exhibition titled “Eye on the World”. The show celebrates the role photography plays in shaping our understanding of the world and asks the viewer to consider the questions posed by Dorthea Lange to every photograph: “Is this my world? If not, what does it have to do with my world?”

3. Spokane Falls Community College - Lost and Found

The Spokane Falls Community College Photography Program is hosting a gallery exhibition titled “Lost and found” features hand made artist books by Frank Hamrick and Wet Plate Collodion prints by Katherine Rondina.

The exhibition highlights the “lost” art of handmade bookmaking and 19^th century Wet Plate photography and expands the visual lexicon beyond contemporary digital photography and highlights how new insights into the modern may be “found” in the intrinsic value of craftsmanship and physical artifacts.

4. Dean Davis Photography - Tension

Eva Sköld Westerlind and Frank Knapp

Dean Davis Photography is hosting a exhibition of work by Seattle based artist Eva Sköld Westerlind and Spokane photographer Frank Knapp in a show titled “Tension”. The show is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Region Conference.

The work of both photographers explores the qualities of water, light, and time. Sköld Westerlind writes, “I seek to capture close-up scenes from the water surface that reveal the beauty and the mystery when light meets water in these natural settings.”

5. Kolva Sullivan Gallery - Dangerous Excess of Human Knowledge

W.B. Fontenot

The Kolva-Sullivan Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition of photographic work by Los Angeles photographer W.B. Fontenot. The show is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Region Conference.

Fontenot’s inspiration derives from the dystopias of authors such as George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. Fontenot creates a parallel universe that mocks our own digital obsession and increased consumption, creating characters that echo the imagery and themes of “1984” and “A Brave New World” as well as other dystopian worlds.

6. Nectar Tasting Room - Alterations

Works by Erin Jennings and Mike Emme

The Nectar Tasting Room is hosting an exhibition of photographic work titled “Alterations” that is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Region Conference.

Works by Victoria British Columbia photographer Mike Emme and Memphis Tennesee photographer Erin Jennings. The theme Alterations refers to the idea of change and abstraction. Jenning’s work depicts the movements of Burlesque dancers that alter the viewer’s perception of the dancer while Emme’s photographs offer a close-up view of natural processes of decay.

7. Brick Wall Gallery - Looking Back

Works by Jane Goffe and Del Lusk

The Brick Wall Gallery is hosting an exhibition titled, “Looking Back,” sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Regional Conference. The show presents the works of Spokane-based photographer, Del Lusk and Montana artist, Jane Goffe who both utilize historic photographic processes to make modern imagery.

Del Lusk makes traditional silver gelatin fiber prints by hand while Jane Goffe specializes in 19^th century processes of gum bichromate, cyanotype, and silver gelatin which result in prints that are truly one-of-a-kind.

Goffe’s work emphasizes “impressionistic” landscape scenes and Lusk’s most recent work is devoted to mannequins that portray human interaction using inanimate stand-ins.

8. Barili Winery - Abstract Americana

Barili Cellars is hosting a photography exhibition titled “Abstract Americana” which is featuring the work of 6 artist and is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education in conjunction with the Northwest Region Conference that is happening November 3-6^th in Spokane Washington. The work focuses on the patterns and textures of decay within the rural landscape.

SFCC hosted its annual student portfolio review. Twenty-nine 5th & 6th quarter students presented their work to 14 professional photographers. The reviewers represented a who's who of Spokane area photographers. Here is a list of participants:

Tony Boccaccio

Tony is a former National Geographic staff photographer who has photographed on assignments all over the world. He is represented by Getty Images and has spent the last 40 years documenting the impact of mining and development on the Amazon forest in Brazil.

Ifong Chen

Ifong is a wedding photojournalist who is one of the most sought after wedding photographers in Spokane. She is also a recent alumni from SFCC.

Jed Conklin

Jed is a photojournalist who travels internationally on assignments as well as shooting commercial advertising for adventure sport manufacturers.

Dean Davis

Dean is a highly successful commercial photographer and fine artist as well as a past-president of the Spokane Ad Federation.

Rich Heinzen

Rich has been a highly successful tock and commercial photographer for more than 40 years. He is represented by Super Stock out of Florida and makes his home in Bayview Idaho.

John Mark

John is president of Dorian Photography studios. Dorian provides school photography and yearbook services in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona.

Colin Mulvany

Colin is a is a multimedia producer and staff photographer at The Spokesman-Review, a 100,000-circulation newspaper that covers eastern Washington and North Idaho. He is also nationally recognized teacher of multimedia journalism for the National Press Photographers Association and the Knight Media Foundation.

Matt Norbut

Matt is a HD Video producer for Magnus films. Matt has worked on national Campaigns for companies such as Microsoft, Xbox and the American Heart Association. He creates documentaries, commercials, and corporate vides for web and broadcast.

Tony Roslund

Tony is a 3^rd generation photographer specializing in product and advertising photography. Roslund Photography is a family owned business with studios in Boca Raton, San Diego and Spokane.

Megan Schuyler

Megan works as a producer and editor for the non-fiction division of North by Northwest Productions. She also also started GryffinClaw Productions LLC, to produce a feature-length documentary "The Wizard Rockumentary," about Harry Potter fans and Wizard Rock musicians.

Jen Scott

Jen is a fine Art photographer who exhibits regionally and received her MFA from Washington State University. She has taught as an adjunct professor at WSU and Eastern Washington University. She works in mixed media and creates photographs with a strong personal narrative.

Rick Singer

Rick is a Brooks Institute of Photography graduate and successful portrait photographer for more than 30 years. He specializes in natural light photography and has two major exhibitions of portraits of artists and musicians that have been collected by the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Craig Sweat

Craig is a SFCC Alumni and successful corporate and advertising photographer who has been in business for more than 25 years. He is chair of the SFCC Photography Industry Advisory Committee and has been a guest lecturer on how photography affects marketing and advertising.

Bill Winter

Bill is a premier portrait photographer who shoots weddings nationally and internationally. He owns and operates Summit photography and has recently become teacher at the After Dark workshops.

SFCC Photography hosts Del Lusk

The photography program is hosting fine art photographer, Del Lusk as a guest speaker on Thursday May 6th during the Advanced Black & White class at 10:30 am. Mr. Lusk utilizes large format film cameras and traditional darkroom techniques to produce his sepia toned 11x14 prints.

In addition to the presentation Del's work is being exhibited in our photography gallery during the month of May.

The SFCC Photo Arts Club hosted their final "First Monday" lecture series event on May 3rd. Jay Cousins gave a presentation on the history of photography, quantum physics, and discussed our perceptions of truth or fiction in looking at images ranging from historic to contemporary digital manipulations.

Get Lit Festival - Exhibition at the Bing Crosby Theater

SFCC students staged a photography exhibition at the Bing Theater in downtown Spokane as part of the 2010 Get Lit Festival. This year's theme was "Fathers Day" in honor of the 100th anniversary of the holiday that was founded here in Spokane.

In addition to hosting the exhibition, SFCC Students provided documentary photography for the Get Lit Festival at venues all over Spokane!

The GRID PROJECT

SFCC Photography students spent two months photographing within the Spokane International District as part of a new program called "The GRID PROJECT". Students worked in teams and photographed in 4 block segments, documenting the character of the neighborhood.

The results of this project was a public exhibition at the Empyrean Coffee Shop in downtown Spokane as part of the 2010 Get Lit Festival.

First Monday Speaker - Steve Conner

The SFCC Photo Arts Club hosted a lecture by FBI Forensic Photographer, Steve Conner on April 5th, 2010. Mr. Conner is an alumni of SFCC and has been a past president of the Professional Photographers of Washington and has won numerous awards and national honors.

His presentation covered how to build professional relationships and gave an overview of how photography plays a vital role in criminal investigations as well as civil lawsuits. Mr. Conner spoke to the ethical considerations necessary in order for photography to be admissible as evidence in a court of law.

In addition to this attendees learned about different techniques for revealing hidden details within any crime scene.

2010 Student Portfolio Review

2nd Year photography students participated in our annual portfolio review that featured guest critics from industry including filmmakers, commercial photographers, photojournalists, and portrait photographers.

Each student met individual with judges and received verbal feedback as well as a score sheet that is used to tabulate the progress of students preparing to graduate from the photography program. Data from the review is used by program faculty to implement curriculum changes for the following year and is reviewed by the program's outside advisory committee.

First Monday Speaker - Colin Mulvany

The second "First Monday" speaker series event was held March 1st with photojournalist Colin Mulvany giving a presentation on the significance of social documentary photography and the need for professional journalism.

Colin described the impact the internet has had on professional journalism and the convergence of still photography and video journalism. More than 100 newspapers have closed in the past year while consumer interest in news content has grown tremendously. Mr. Mulvany described the need for large watchdog media outlets to keep government agencies and large corporations accountable for their actions and gave examples of how his work has directly impacted public policy.

First Monday Speaker Series Launches

The SFCC Photo Arts Club launched a series of lectures on visual literacy starting with a presentation by Spokane photographer Craig Sweat. The goal of this series is to increase the level of visual literacy within the community.

Mr. Sweat gave a presentation on the role photography has played in advertising and the impact images have on the economy. The event was held in the Spartan Theater.

SFCC Photography Program Hosts International Journalism Delegation

On December 7th the Spokane Falls Community College Photography and Journalism Clubs hosted a delegation of Russian Journalist for a two hour program (10:30 am – 12:30pm) that includes a catered luncheon and panel discussion that was attended by over 40 community members and students.  The program included a tour of the Journalism and Photography programs at SFCC and a round table discussion about the role of news media as a watchdog for government and large corporations and how this role is being threatened by the economic crisis within journalism institutions.

The event was sponsored by Open World Leadership Center and was facilitated by SCC Dean of Instructional Services, Mary Carr and SFCC Photography Instructor, Ira Gardner. The delegation explored the current state of journalism in the United States as evidenced by representative media outlets, individual journalists, and journalism schools in Spokane and the region. They discussed topics such as ethics in journalism, the influence of the new media on journalism, the state of newspapers in the United States, the first amendment, and the impact of the 24-hour news cycle in journalism.

Washington Award for Vocational Excellence

The Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) program recognizes and rewards students who excel in career and technical education. The state Legislature created the award in 1984. Since then, more than 3,000 students have received assistance in paying their college tuition, boosting their ability to reach education and career goals. The Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board (Workforce Board) administers the award each year. The Workforce Board also oversees the annual WAVE poster contest, giving student artists the chance to promote the award, and showcase their talents.

The Award
WAVE awards pay undergraduate educational tuition for two years (six quarters or four semesters) at an accredited public or private college or university, or licensed vocational school. Students are reimbursed up to the amount of the highest tuition charged by a public university in the state. If tuition is paid for through other means, the WAVE funds can be used to pay for other valid educational expenses, such as books, supplies, room, board, or transportation. The grant is based on undergraduate study only. The student must maintain a term grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to continue using the award. To get more details, view the

Selection
Three WAVE recipients (two from high schools/skills centers and one from community/technical colleges) are chosen from each legislative district by a selection committee. Each high school and skills center may submit an application for at least one student and as many as four students, depending on the total number of graduating vocational program completers. The number of applicants submitted from community and technical colleges is determined by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.

Eligibility
A student is eligible to apply for the WAVE award if currently a state resident enrolled in a Washington state high school, skills center, or public community or technical college, and by June 30, 2009, will:

graduate from high school having completed a minimum of 360 hours in a single, approved vocational program; or
be enrolled in a public community or technical college and complete at least one year (minimum of 360 hours) in an approved vocational program; and
not have been a previous WAVE recipient.

Toy Cameras Make Great Art!

SFCC student Trevor Stratton recently completed an independent study that involved creating a portfolio of fine art black and white prints using a plastic Holga camera. Trevor was able to shoot medium format film and modified the camera to accept 35mm film in a panoramic format. He then used a glass negative carrier to print the negatives from edge to edge, revealing the sprocket holes used by traditional 35mm cameras. The final images really remind us of the photographic relationship we have with place and the beauty of traditional film.

Spokane Ag Expo Contest

Adults and students alike have an opportunity to participate in the 2009 Spokane Ag Expo photography contest celebrating agriculture. Shutterbugs of all ages are asked to submit entries depicting “Agriculture in the Inland Northwest”. Entries must be submitted by November 17, 2008 and will be displayed at Spokane Ag Expo, which is held the Spokane Convention Center Complex. The dates of the show are February 3-5, 2009.

Two categories will be awarded – adult and youth (under 18 years old).

What: The Artluck show brings together artists, curators, and the public to view art. It combines a slideshow with a potluck to which members of the Eastern Washington arts, photography, and media communities share a buffet dinner, bring a drink (non-alcoholic) to share, and a readiness to watch an incredibly diverse array of artwork. The Institute for Extended Learning will provide some food for the event but guests must bring non-alcoholic beverages. There is no entrance fee or guest list except for a non-alcoholic beverage to share such as soda, juice, or water. Following the dinner, the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular slideshow is presented. Please RSVP if you will attend.

Who: The event is open to photographers, artists, sculptors, photo editors, curators, journalists, and other members of the media and community. Presenters range from the very accomplished to the up and coming, but regardless of status, no one is allotted more than 4 minutes for their slideshow. Participants are encouraged to take creative risks, in terms of content and presentation. Slideshows can be accompanied by music or commentary.

Submitting work: All artists must submit their work in digital format on a CD, mailed or delivered to Jim Mohr, Institute for Extended Learning (IEL), 3305 W. The Brick Wall Gallery is looking for student submissions. Photographs will be displayed at the gallery and will be hung just before the Spokane First Friday Art Walk each month. All accepted submissions must be matted and framed before they will be displayed. Print size will be up to the student with gallery’s approval.

Industry Experts Critique Student Work

Photography student Tyra Williams has produced an interesting portrait project entitled "Real People, Real Stories" which portrays people who have scars. Tyra found participants from the project from Craigslist.com and says she was "very intrigued by the different scars people have and why they have them. Every scar has a story. The scars have shaped the person, they have caused the person pain, and they have empowered the person to overcome any obstacle."

Photo student Jeff Ferguson had work featured in January issue of the Spokane Tribal newspaper. He photographed the Wellness Winter Pow Wow and Dinner held at Gary Middle School. The pow wow combines diabetes screening with christmas cheer. Jeff is a member of the Spokane tribe and graduated from Shadle Park high school.

The Award
Recipients of this annual tuition award receive monetary grants, based on availability of funds, to pay undergraduate educational tuition expenses for two years (six quarters or four semesters) at a Washington State institution of higher education, an accredited Washington State independent college or university, or a licensed private vocational school. If tuition is paid for through other means, the WAVE funds can be used to pay for other valid educational expenses, such as books, supplies, room, board, or transportation. The grant is based on undergraduate study only. The student must maintain a term grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to continue using the award..

Eligibility
A student is eligible to apply for the WAVE award if currently a state resident enrolled in a Washington State high school, skills center, or public community or technical college, and by June 30, 2008, will:

1) graduate from high school having completed a minimum of 360 hours in a single, approved vocational program; or
2) be enrolled in a public community or technical college and complete at least one year (minimum of 360 hours) in an approved vocational program; and
3) not have been a previous WAVE recipient.

SNAP Calendar Project

SFCC Photo student Vanessa Hadford completed an independent study in social documentary photography Fall Quarter 2007. Vanessa worked with the Spokane Neihborhood Action Program to photograph people for a calendar that will be marketed to raise funds for SNAP programs dealing with poverty and homelessness.

Here is a slideshow of some of Vanessa's photographs of people participating in a program at the Salvation Army, low income housing residents who are being moved out of the Otis Hotel in downtown Spokane, and a homeless couple living along the Spokane River.

This project was coordinated through the SFCC Service Learning Office.

Photo Students Help COPS Northeast

This provides holiday family memories for low income families that otherwise would go without. Dorian Studio Field Trip

SFCC photo students had an opportunity to visit Dorian Photography Studio in downtown Spokane on Tuesday, November 21st. Dorian Studio is the largest privately held photography business in Spokane with locations in Boise, Las Vegas, Portland, Phoenix, Seattle, and Tri Cities. Students were greeted by members of the Mark family (Joe and Yvonne, and their son John) who have owned the studio for over 30 years. Students toured the photography studios, production lab, and packaging departments and met employees from every department including studio manager Bryan Bowman, photographer Greg Cotton, and SFCC photography alum Amy Barker who has worked in the digital department for Dorian ever since her first internship over six years ago.

SFCC Photography is grateful for the ongoing support of Dorian Studio. In September of 2007 Dorians donated three Mamiya 6x7 camera systems along with multiple lenses and accessories. John Mark also serves on the Photography Professional Advisory Committee that oversees the curriculum development for our program.

Digital Video and Still Photography: Converging Technologies

SFCC Photography will be teaching PHOTO 237 Introduction to Documentary Digital Video Production winter quarter, marking the formal adoption of full-motion video into our curriculum. Digital Video and Still Photography have been on a converging path for the past 7 years.

The national trade association ASMP first published articles about commercial photographers adding video to their services in 2003 and the most recent November 2007 issue of CalumetFocus has an article by Joseph Seif announcing Calumet's addition of video technology to their photographic equipment sales catalog. The calumet article outlines the paradigm shift that is taking place and says "Today there is (video) equipment that will capture 12MP full-frame stills at up to 60 frames persecond and has film like dynamic range." Still photographers are now being asked to capture video as well as still photography in order to provide images for websites and podcasts. Portrait photographers have been providing wedding videography for many years.

In preparation for this paradigm shift, SFCC Instructor Ira Gardner began training in video in 2001 and designed and taught workshop courses starting in 2002. In 2004, SFCC hired film maker Joan Conger who designed the current curriculum at SFCC that was approved in 2005. Ira and Joan have team taught video production and have been collaborating on a film project for the last two years.

In addition to this, adjunct instructor Colin Mulvany, who works for the Spokesman Review and teaches photojournalism for us, has seen his job change from producing still images for print media to producing video blogs. In September of 2005 Colin was featured in a Wall Street Journal article as being a national leader in the shift from traditional still photography to multimedia and video content creation. Colin is a member of our program advisory committee and has helped us with curriculum development and technology acquisition.

Students who enroll in PHOTO 237 will learn to capture and edit video using industry standard software Final Cut Pro. As we move towards the new year, we look forward to embracing the new imaging paradigm.

SFCC signs new articulation agreements with Spokane School District 81

SFCC photography instructors Rodger Hartman and Ira Gardner met with high school instructors from all of District 81's high schools and negotiated articulation agreements that will enable high school students to enroll in PHOTO 126 and receive college credit upon successful completion of a full year of photography classwork. During this meeting faculty agreed to meet regularly to hold training sessions and to host the high school students at the college during their year of study.

In addition to the photography articulation agreement a new agreement was signed with Ferris High School that will enable high school students to enroll in PHOTO 237 Introduction to Documentary Video Production. High school students will take a year of filmmaking classes from Joan Conger and will receive college credit. Joan Conger is also an adjunct instructor at SFCC and designed the PHOTO 237 curriculum.

Students tour Summit Photography Studio

Thursday November 15th, SFCC Students took a field trip to Summit Photography and met with owner Bill Winter. Bill gave our students an introduction to Adobe Lightroom and digital workflow related to Wedding Photography. Students also had an opportunity to see first hand the possibilities of living in Spokane while traveling all over the world to photograph weddings.

Nick Follger welcomes SFCC students

SFCC students from Ira Gardner's Portraiture class attended a field trip at Nick Follger's studio on Tuesday November 13th. Nick has over 30 years of experience and is a truly a master craftsman of photography. Students were given a complete tour and a lighting demonstration in the studio. Students were also able to observe normal studio operations during the busy holiday season with Michele Follger working with numerous clients who were placing or picking up portrait orders during the two hours students spent with Nick. SFCC has numerous opportunities for students to create work that gets widely published. The United Way has been working with SFCC students to photograph all of the 23 affiliated service agencies in their network. These photo-reportage images are used by each agency and the United Way on websited, brochures, calendars, and many other ways. Students receive full photography credits for work submitted.

During spring quarter the following students completed an independent study with Ira Gardner titled Documentary photography: Vanessa Hadford, Liz Batallier, Marcia Rapier, Fran Hailey, Ingrid Lindemann-Barrentine, DW Johnson, Jordan Andre, Carlena Hockersmith, and Viktoryia Kuropatko.

The need for images and video is ongoing so if there are any current students interested in creating portfolio quality photojournalistic style imagery, please contact Ira Gardner by email at irag@spokanefalls.edu

Gallery Exhibit November 5th - December 14th

SFCC Photography is hosting Portland based photographer Douglas Bienert for a guest lecture and gallery exhibit November 5th at 10:30 am in the main classroom. Douglas graduated from SFCC Photography in 1989 and was a classmate of current instructors Erik Sohner and Ira Gardner. He also completed his bachelors degree at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. His show "Urban Wayfarer" will be up until December 14th.

The photography gallery exhibit by R.L. Dietz's night photography has been enjoyed by many since the beginning of Fall quarter. Friday November 2nd will be the last day of this year's show. R.L. has been working for SFCC as a instructional lab tech and summer quarter instructor for 7 years now and brings over thirty years of photography experience. If you ever need help with color or black and white photography, he is a great resource. Of course you'll have to show up at night to catch him!
