Cell Phone Typology
Students in the Photo 101 classes investigated typologies while using their cell phone to make straight forward symmetrical portraits. The activity was design to explore the aesthetics associated with photographing in a manner similar to how a daguerreotype was made as well as to explore the power of the work of Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, and August Sanders.
The activity started with a question about the impact of using a waist level finder on composition and ended with a discussion about the design principle of unity and variety. While the quality of the image varied by the phone, the power of the images was apparent to all.
